The Music That Made 2024 for Me
As I continue reflecting on 2024, I realise how much of a role music played.
I see classical music as a mini superpower: When I listen to a piece, it can dramatically shift my emotional state, giving me the mental strength I need to continue with my day.
I’ve covered one piece of music on Philosophy I Need It rather recently; it was the magnificent Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony. I encourage you to check out the article “For the Pursuit of Happiness” if you haven't already done so.
As I look at my listening statistics, I see that a few composers dominated 2024, such as Dvořák, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, and, of course, Brahms. However, one composer's works particularly affected me this year: Tchaikovsky.
Most notably, his Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, which is also known as the Pathétique Symphony.
I was fortunate enough to attend a live performance of the piece at the Israeli Philharmonic twice this year.
This piece is an explosive, emotional roller coaster that will take you on a dramatic journey from pure happiness and love to grief and trauma. It’s very much a reflection of Tchaikvosky’s own turbulent life. Some even interpret the piece as a suicide letter, as he mysteriously died nine days after its premiere on November 6th, 1893.
Go and listen to it now. I recommend this performance by Karajan and the Wiener Philharmonic. Shut your eyes and concentrate on the roller coaster ride. Be prepared to laugh, dance with joy, and cry.
If you read the review of 2024, I think it will be rather easy for you to ascertain why this piece resonated so much with me.
Classical music is one of life’s greatest gifts—a superpower I couldn’t imagine 2024 without. Cherish it!
Let me know what you think about this piece in the comments.
